The concept of homeschooling has been around for centuries and has a rightful place in the field of education. Now a days, institutions of education house children and teachers for everyday learning. Institutions are the primary means of childcare and learning because of societal changes within the family structure, economy, and other factors. Homeschooling children is an alternative to institutions. Nevertheless, homeschooling is still quite relevant.

Some parents use homeschool learning to remove student or victims of bullying and other negative social experiences. Other parents homeschool to create stronger family bonds and learn more about their culture. For example,in the African-American community homeschool learning is trending rapidly. "Their reasons for homeschooling are similar to those of homeschool parents in general, although some use homeschooling to help their children understand Black culture and history. The average reading, language, and math test scores of these Black homeschool students are significantly higher than those of Black public school students"(Ray, 2015, par. 1). Homeschool is a great way to have an in-depth understanding of the world and cultures through frequent field trips and social outings that school institutions can not frequently provide for students. Here are some Facts about Homeschool from the National Home Education Research Institute.

  • There are about 2.3 million home-educated students in the United States. This is up from one estimate that there were about 2 million children (in grades K to 12) home educated during the spring of 2010 in the United States (Ray, 2011). It appears the homeschool population is continuing to grow (at an estimated 2% to 8% per annum over the past few years)

  • Homeschooling – that is, parent-led home-based education; home education – is an age-old traditional educational practice that a decade ago appeared to be cutting-edge and “alternative” but is now bordering on “mainstream” in the United States. It may be the fastest-growing form of education in the United States. Home-based education has also been growing around the world in many other nations (e.g., Australia, Canada, France, Hungary, Japan, Kenya, Russia, Mexico, South Korea, Thailand, and the United Kingdom)

  • A demographically wide variety of people homeschool – these are atheists, Christians, and Mormons; conservatives, libertarians, and liberals; low-, middle-, and high-income families; black, Hispanic, and white; parents with Ph.D.s, GEDs, and no high-school diplomas. One study shows that 32 percent of homeschool students are Black, Asian, Hispanic, and others (i.e., not White/non-Hispanic) (Noel, Stark, & Redford, 2013).

  • Homeschooling is quickly growing in popularity among minorities. About 15% of homeschool families are non-white/non-Hispanic (i.e., not white/Anglo).

  • The Black homeschool children’s high achievement test scores were very remarkable. Parents without teaching certificates helping their children from a traditionally low-achieving minority group excel this way should cause all educators and social advocacy groups to take special note.
